Our Adventure at Billie Swamp Safari

Billie Swamp Safari, Florida Everglades

Billie Swamp Safari

Billie Swamp Safari is located on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in Clewiston, FL.  This is a great place to visit, to learn about the different types of snakes and animals found in the Everglades.  They have different shows, air boat rides and the famous Swamp Buggy Tour.  I have been wanting to visit here forever.  I had always wanted to ride on that Swamp Buggy and when i told people about it, they would just look at me crazy. – LOL

Well, Nadia came home from school one day with a permission slip for the Billie Swamp Safari.  There was no way she was going without me too.  Yes, I will chaperone!  Yikes, I have never chaperoned a class field trip before!  Yes, I have volunteered at the school before, but never on a field trip.

So, before I arrived at school that day I was more nervous of the kids than of the swamp critters, but as soon as I arrived in the class room, I was at ease.  I love kids and the whole grade was so well-behaved and good.  We ALL had a great time.

Anyway let me tell you about the adventure:

Billie Swamp Safari, Clewiston, FL

Nadia’s class was on the last bus and Nadia wanted us to sit up front.  We drove a while on Alligator Alley and then turned off halfway and headed 30 miles North to Clewiston.  I did not realize it was this far away from Alligator Alley.  We were traveling on a two-lane highway for quite sometime and you could spot some alligators  in the water along side the road.  The kids were very excited.  Then all of a sudden, I spotted a WILD HOG come running out in front of the bus.  I was in such shock that all I could yell out was “there’s a PIG!”  The bus driver was able to slow down in time and I think we were all in shock.  We all laughed afterwards.  It was big, tan in color with black hair on its razor back. Sorry guys, I was in such shock, I could not get to my camera in time.

As soon as we all arrived, we headed over to The Swamp Critter Show.

We then headed over to the Air boat Rides.  What fun was that and such beautiful scenery.  I am used to seeing just miles of miles of sawgrass when I go on an air boat ride, but this place had much different views.

Yes, even this big guy was found out there.  It was neat to see the water buffalo cross through the water.  Our guide was really good with the kids.  We learned about mistletoe and that it is very poisonous.  I did not even know we had that in Florida let a lone in the Everglades.

After lunch we walked over to the Florida Panther Exhibit.

We then went on a nature walk.  Good Lord! were the Alligators huge!  I have never seen any that big before let alone not behind a wall in the zoo.  We were up on a boardwalk.  Look how they blend in:

On our walk, we saw one of the Chickees you can rent to camp in.

Now it was time for the Venomous Snake Show. This was great, because the guide showed all the poisonous snakes of Florida except for the Coral Snake.  He really stressed to the kids to be very careful out in nature cause the snakes can really blend in to their surroundings and they are not to be played with.

I did not get up close to these snakes.  The guide took my camra and kept it up there with him so he could take the pictures safely.

Alright, now was the time I had been waiting for, the SWAMP BUGGY TOUR!!!

Swamp Buggy Ride at Billie Swamp Safari, Florida Everglades

The Swamp Buggy

I think we had about 4 Swamp Buggies for our group.  It was a lot of fun as we bounced along. Our guide was very good and joked around with the kids, while teaching them about how the Seminoles survived in the swamp.  It was very interesting.  We drove through water and on land.  We passed some more Buffalo and drove through a Hammock Area, where Panthers have been seen, unfortunately we did not see any Panthers on this ride.

Our buggy passed by an air boat tour:

Here are some other sights that we saw:

Well, that concludes our Billie Swamp Safari Adventure.  We all had a great time, learned a lot and the staff was really great and patient.

Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Then Home – Oh My!

Animal Kingdom - Walt Disney World Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL

Animal Kingdom

When Nadia and I awoke from our tent, we were surprised to find it was cold out!  It was 60 degrees, which is cold to us Floridians.

Today was going to be a big day.  We needed to take down our tent and pack up to leave.  Today was the last day of our Disney Fun. Nadia and I were also going to go to Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and then drive home.

So after our breakfast and showers, we tackled the campsite clean up.  It was not so bad and Nadia helped out a lot.  We packed up the car and drove to the Fort Wilderness Check-in Parking lot and parked the car.  Then we hopped on a bus to Hollywood Studios.

When we arrived at Hollywood Studios we went directly to the Tower of Terror, but before we got in line we went and got a fast pass at the Aerosmith Rockin Rollercoaster Ride.  Nadia said she was ready to try her first upside down rollercoaster ride.   I was not ready to ride the Tower of Terror, but it was Nadia’s favorite ride. Oh boy.

When we were done at Tower of Terror, we had time to kill so we ran to the Toy Story Ride.  Again, we could not get on this ride.  The next fast pass was at 6pm it was only 12pm!  So, you need to hit this ride asap to get a fast pass!!

We headed back to Aerosmith and got in the fast pass line.  Nadia loved the ride.  She said it is now her new favorite.

The new “favorite” ride

Since we had the park hopper ticket, we then left and caught a bus for the Animal Kingdom.  As soon as we arrived, we headed over to Expedition Everest to get a fast pass.  We then ate lunch.  We walked around and looked at the animals.

We also went on a few rides before our fast pass was ready.  Expedition Everest was going to be our last ride, before we had to start heading home.

When we arrived at the ride, we still had 20 minutes before we could get in line.  About 5 minutes before we went to get in line the ride broken-down.  They had to pull people from the top of the ride and they had to climb down stairs.  Sorry, but I was not going to put Nadia and I on that ride today.  Nadia was very upset and could not understand why we just could not wait. I finally was able to get her to calm down (she needed to sleep).

We went and had a quick meal and I got us some coffee and hot cocoa for Nadia for the ride home. We took a bus back to Fort Wilderness and got to our car.  As soon as we were on the Turnpike.  Nadia was fast asleep.  It was a very busy, non-stop four days, but it was worth it.

Epcot Fun at The Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, FL

Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort - Orlando, FL

After eating our donuts and my “iced instant coffee”, we caught a bus from the Fort Wilderness Campground to spend the whole day at Epcot.  The Food and Wine Festival was still going on during our visit.

You could definitely feel the impact of hurricane Sandy passing by Florida this day.  There was no rain, but just very strong gusty winds.  I was kind of worried about our tent, hoping it would still be there when we arrived back at the campground that night.

When we first arrived, we hit all the attractions in Future World, like Nemo, The Land and Soarin, etc. before heading over to the Countries.

Nemo at Epcot - Walt Disney World - Orlando, FL

Nemo

The Land Pavillion was all decorated for the fall.

Epcot in the Fall - Disney World Resorts - Orlando, FL

Inside the Land

Here is a Tip:  As soon as you get into Epcot, you should make sure you get a FAST PASS for Soarin.  It is located in the Land Pavillion.  The regular wait can be over an hour and this is a ride that should not be missed.  (I wish they would put one of these in all the Countries)

Test Track was being refurbished while we were there, so we did not get to ride this time.  (This is another ride to try to get a fast pass for)

We were finally ready to go to the World Showcase to visit the Countries.  They not only had food from all the Countries located in the World Showcase, they also had kiosks set up of other Countries.  There was a wide variety of food to try, but pricey.

Our first stop was Mexico, so I got myself a frozen Margherita and a Churro for Nadia.  We then quickly walked over to Norway and signed up for the new Phineas & Ferb’s Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure.  This was the old Kim Possible Adventure.  Still the same fun game, just with Phineas & Ferb helping Agent P stop Dr. Doof in his tracks.  We had fun playing.

After we were done, we headed back to Mexico and hit the Kid Funcot Station.  This time, each child was able to color an Agent P mask, which you would then take to each Country to get a special stamp.  Nadia really enjoyed this and it is FREE.

The Giant Troll in Norway - Epcot - Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, FL

The Giant Troll in Norway

We visited each attraction in each Country and did the Kidcot Station. There was a Sister Hazel Concert going on by the America Pavillion.  We did not really try that much food, but I did try the cheese soup in Canada.  That was YUMMY.

The only draw back was that there were a lot of glassy eyed people walking around and they seemed to be annoyed by the kids as I was getting annoyed by them walking into me.  So, if you are doing a family oriented trip and this would bother you, plan your stay not for the Food and Wine Festival time.  (We have enjoyed ourselves more at Epcot when we have gone at other times)

We did not get to stay for the Fireworks.  Again, we were exhausted and Nadia was starting to have a meltdown and she is too big for me to carry now. So we headed back to the bus to The Fort Wilderness Campground.

Nadia and I were both very happy to see that our Tent survived.  It was still in place and in one piece :)  We fell right to sleep.

Disney at Night – Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

Sunset at the Magic Kingdom, Orlando, FL

For the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, it got a lot more crowded and it started to drizzle.  But no fear we had our Disney Ponchos :)  It was fun to see everyone’s Halloween Costumes.  I wished that I would have dressed in a costume too, but it was just too much of a hassle for me to deal with.  Nadia and I were already starting to get snappy with each other cause we were getting tired.  We needed to eat.  We ended up getting soft pretzels.  They are just so good.

We headed over to the Haunted Mansion.  Wow, did they change that up for Halloween. They had two lines going.  One line for the regular way and another line that took you through a cemetery.  This time we opted for the line through the cemetery.

Nadia and I also decided to Climb the Swiss Family Robinson Tree at night.  Here are some views from the top.

Here was how Thunder Mountain looked at night.

We stopped to watch the parade.  Before the parade started, you heard galloping and the Headless Horseman came galloping by.  That was something definitely to see!  Also, was Captain Jack on his float! I just could not get a good enough picture :(

After we were done riding some more rides, we did a little trick or treating and then decided to head back to the campground.  It was only 10:00 p.m., but we were exhausted.  We caught the boat to go back to the campground.

Even though we were exhausted, we still had a really full day of fun.

Our Fun at the Magic Kingdom During the Day

Cinderella's Castle at the Magic Kingdom, Orlando, FL

Now I have to admit, I was lazy when it came to making breakfast.  I did not feel like lugging out my “electric burner” double stove top and making sure it was cooled down before we left for the parks, so we had donuts for breakfast.  I had brought some powdered donuts and a box of Entenmann’s donuts.  I also found that the Starbucks instant coffee tasted good to me stirred in cold water.  I know that Starbucks instant coffee is expensive, but I think it is the best tasting instant coffee out there.  It wakes me up, so I try to use it sparingly. (like when I am going camping)

When we were all set to go to the Magic Kingdom, we walked to the bus stop and caught a bus to “The Settlement Depot”.  This is where you would go to take the boat over to the Magic Kingdom.  Nadia and I really enjoy the boat ride.  You can choose to sit outside or inside.  We opted to sit on the outside in the front.  Here are some views you can see from the boat on your way the Magic Kingdom.

Everything was so nicely decorated for the Fall.  I LOVED it.

The lines were not bad at all.  We got to ride most of the rides 4 times in a row.  Peter Pan was the long wait, so please make sure to use the fast pass for that ride.  I think we waited for an hour without the fast pass!

Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, FL

We ate lunch at the Columbia House near the Haunted Mansion.  I love eating there.  We got to actually eat upstairs in a room I have never been in.  Sometimes the upstairs is blocked off.  This is a fast service restaurant.  You order, pay, pickup and then find a place to eat.

The new Fantasy Land was not quite finished yet (it is now open).  They were not letting anybody in that area.  I tried at different times of the day.  So here are the only photos I could get for you all.

At 7:00 p.m. we showed our Disney Halloween Tickets and got a bracelet (so we could ride the rides) We were also given goody bags (for trick or treating) and Nadia changed into her Fairy Costume.  Now it was time for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party….

Our Day at Downtown Disney at The Walt Disney World Resort

Fultons at Downtown Disney in the Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, FL

Downtown Disney

After we had our campsite set up at The Fort Wilderness Campground, Nadia and I, hopped on a bus to go to Downtown Disney.  We decided we were going to treat ourselves and eat lunch at the T-REX Cafe.  We do not really get a chance to eat out much so this was a very nice splurge for us. (Thank goodness for the Disney Rewards Card)

T-Rex Cafe at Downtown Disney, Orlando, FL

T-Rex Cafe

This is a dinosaur themed restaurant, as you can tell by the above picture.  It is quite noisy inside with the roaring of the dinosaurs, but I love the theming.  I think they did a good job.

This big guy was right next to our table. It would turn its head every now and then. Cool!

Even though our meals that we ordered were a bit pricey, (at least I thought so) they tasted very good and were very filling.  Nadia ordered the featured kids drink, which was like a frozen fruit punch served in a plastic dinosaur bone cup and you get to keep the cup.

After we were done eating, we walked around Downtown Disney and came upon the New Phineus and Ferb & You exhibit. (I believe this was just temporary until Dec. 1, 2012. – Not sure if they decided to extend the time it was available)

Phineus & Ferb at Downtown Disney, Orlando, FL

Phineus & Ferb

What it is, is a giant TV screen and you get to interact with the characters.  Like for instance, Nadia did a soccer scene, so she had to kick the ball and they took a photo. (But I just took a photo of the big screen)

Phineus and Ferb & You Exhibit at Downtown Disney, Orlando, FL

The bad thing, is you could not pick the scene you wanted to be in.  I would have liked a scene with Dr. Doof.  I am sorry, but he just cracks me up.

Now it was time for us to hop on another bus and visit the New Art of Animation Resort, which you can read about here.

After arriving back to Downtown Disney from the Art of Animation Resort, Nadia and I, caught a bus back to the Fort Wilderness Campground.  I then fired up the grill to cook up some turkey burgers that I had brought with us, but I was not hungry still from my big lunch so Nadia ate two burgers.

When I was done cleaning up dinner, we headed on down to the Chip & Dale Campfire Program and then watched the evenings movie which was “A Bugs Life”.

Next Post: On to Disney World.

Tent Camping at Fort Wilderness Campground at the Walt Disney Resort

Tent Camping in Fort Wilderness at The Walt Disney World Resort

Now as I have said before in previous posts, The Fort Wilderness Campground is my favorite Disney Resort to stay at because there is so much to do here, such as: horseback riding, movie/campfire program, canoeing, hayrides and swimming.  I love the outdoors.  This was my very first time tent camping anywhere on my own with just Nadia.  I did tent camp at Fort Wilderness one time with my parents, but I was in 5th Grade then and they were running the show.

The last time I had been to Fort Wilderness, we had stayed in the cabin.  In my opinion, I like the cabin better, but it is very expensive.  Do not get me wrong though, we did have fun with the tenting experience, but there were some downsides to it.

Tent Camp site at Fort Wilderness Resort - Disney World, FL

On this trip, as I was packing and planning, I was not worried at all about bears, because we were going to be in the Disney World Resort.  What I was worried about was that Hurricane Sandy was going to be passing Florida, not hitting us, just passing by at the time we would be camping.  I was worried that the wind gusts would blow our tent away.  Also, would there be a lot of rain?   I had read a review (of course, two days before we were to go), that the site is all sand and that your stakes will not stay in the ground during strong wind.   Yikes!!  Well we ventured out any ways; cause the trip was already paid for with my earned Disney Rewards.

We had an easier time packing up the car on this trip, but still only two seats to sit in.  The driver’s seat and passenger seat.  When we arrived at the campground, the security guard directed us to the drive thru check-in.  The lady that helped us was so nice and answered all of my questions on how to get to the site.

It was very easy to find the site.  The site was big and there was nobody else around us in the other sites. (must have been a slow day – We arrived Wednesday morning).  You do not get a fire pit here, so no campfires unless you bring an approved fire pit with the covering on it.  There was a charcoal grill and a picnic bench.  Here is a link to a brochure of approved fire pits allowed at Fort Wilderness.

Charcoal Grill on Campsite at Fort Wilderness Resort, Orlando, FL

Nadia and I started putting up the tent, but we noticed a lot of fire ants on the ground.  Now, of course in my anxious mind is running wild with images of red ants covering us when we wake up in the morning. (That did not happen J).  Of course, I did not think to bring ant spray.  So I used my mosquito spray and sprayed our tent and all around the ground where our tent was.  Not one bite J also, the tent stakes seemed to stay in the ground, but it also was not windy yet or rainy.  It was just HOT.

After we were done getting set up, Nadia and I found the comfort station (restrooms and showers).  Very clean and nice.  We then found the bus stop and were figuring out the bus transportation system.  Inside the campground there are three different buses that are coded by yellow, orange and purple.  Each one takes you to different settlement posts in the campground.  If you are not sure which one to take, just ask the bus driver before you board and they will explain.  We wanted to get on the bus that would take us to the main bus stop to all the attractions.  We were headed to Downtown Disney to walk around have lunch.

As we were waiting for the bus to arrive, I was reading the bulletin board and to my horror, I read a letter dated August 2012 about black bears in the area.  WHATTTT?????  I did not bring my bear spray, I did not bring unscented soap or shampoo and I am sleeping in a tent!  Great, heart is pounding now.  What the letter was basically saying was to pick up your trash and be bear aware.  If you spot a black bear to call security.  The good news, no black bear sightings on our trip and everything was fine.

Florida Black Bear Notice

Florida Black Bear Notice

The first evening we went to the campfire/movie program after dinner.  The next day the campground filled up and every campsite was taken.  By Friday the wind picked up.  It was so windy at Epcot that my hair was blowing up in the air.  Good news, the tent was A OK.

We really enjoyed ourselves at the campground, but Nadia and I agreed not to do the tent again at Fort Wilderness.  The reason being, that when we go to the parks, we are going non-stop from like 9 in the morning to closing time.  We are exhausted, and would much rather get a shower in a hotel room then having to walk to the tent then carry our belongings down to the comfort station.  Also, it is noisy.  Which I can definitely understand why.  Everyone is excited to be at Disney World, but for Nadia and I, the cabin works better for us.

During the fall season, Nadia and I had a chance to try tent camping on our own at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. (more on that later).  While we were at the resort, we were able to visit Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Downtown Disney and the New Art of Animation Resort.

This post will focus on the Art of Animation Resort because it is BRAND NEW and it looked so cool.  Disney did a GREAT job on their themes here.  Also, The Art of Animation Resort is a Value Resort.  They offer standard rooms all the way up to suites.

Since we were camping out at Fort Wilderness, we took the bus down to Downtown Disney, then hopped on a bus to The Art of Animation Resort.  We walked around the property, but we could not get into the pool areas because it is gated and you would need a resort key to get in.  That was fine, we enjoyed walking around seeing the different themes.  Take a look at what we saw:

Boone Hall Plantation – Charleston, SC

Boone Hall Plantation, Charleston, SC

Boone Hall Plantation, Charleston, SC

Boone Hall Plantation is located in Charleston, SC.  This is where they filmed the TV Miniseries North and South starring the late Patrick Swayze.  I had always thought this was beautiful plantation when I first saw it on the North and South when I was a teenager.  Now imagine how excited I was, when I found out this was a real place and opened to the public!!  (Ok, I have a lot on my mind and only found this out in April of this year when I was researching about Charleston)  I could not wait to ride on the road up to the Mansion under those beautiful oak trees.

Boone Hall Plantation, Charleston, SC

By the time we finally made it over to Boone Hall, we had a little over an hour before they closed and the only tour that was still open was the house tour.  ”We’ll take it” I said to the man selling tickets and we started my dream drive to the Plantation.  Did I forget to mention that it was a dirt road, like sand and it had rained right before we arrived?  When I parked and got out of the car, I was kind of shocked, it looked like I had gone mudding in my car. (Now that is a Road Trip!)  Ah, the mud washes off and it was worth it.  The drive in was beautiful, the whole place was breathtaking.

Boone Hall Plantation, Charleston, SC

Even the horses were beautiful.

The Horses at Boone Hall Plantation, Charleston, SC

Nadia and I walked over to the Mansion and sat on the porch looking out at the oak trees, while we waited our turn for the house tour.  The house tour did not disappoint, our tour guide was very nice and answered all of Nadia’s questions.

I wish we could have stayed longer, but it was time to get back to the “Caboose” for one more night camping and then head home and unpack, do the laundry and clean the car :(

What a GREAT Road-Trip Vacation we had!
